Kansas laws on cell-cultivated and plant-based meat

These Kansas laws are on our Meat Laws page, which lists only laws we could check against an official state source or court record. Laws change and some are in court, so check the source for the latest.

Labeling law

A meat analog that uses a meat term must carry a prominent disclaimer such as "meatless," "meat-free," "vegan" or "plant-based."

Status (Oct. 2026): In effect

Does Kansas run its own meat inspection program?

Yes. Kansas runs its own State Meat and Poultry Inspection (MPI) program, one of 31 states that do. State programs must be "at least equal to" federal inspection, and state-inspected products can be sold within Kansas. The state program covers both meat and poultry. (USDA FSIS list of state inspection programs)

Either way, plants under federal inspection can sell anywhere in the U.S., and custom-exempt meat processed for an owner's own household is marked "Not for Sale." On a package, a USDA mark of inspection with an establishment number means federal inspection, and a state mark means state inspection. See what to look for on a package.
